Patient Participation Group

People with Cogs Working together

Non-urgent advice: What is a Patient Participation Group?

The Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Keats Group Practice is made up of volunteer patients, practice staff, and GP representatives who work together to support and improve your GP Practice healthcare services.

The PPG works collaboratively with the practice to:

  • Improve services and patient experience
  • Provide practical support to the practice
  • Encourage patients to take a more active role in their own health
  • Ensure patient voices are heard in decision-making

The group operates independently on behalf of all patients, helping to represent the needs of the wider practice community.

How our PPG is structured

The PPG is made up of two main groups:

Wider PPG Members

This is the larger group, currently made up of around 100 members. Wider members:

  • Receive updates on key topics, newsletters, and events
  • Review meeting summaries and communications
  • Provide feedback and share ideas
  • May be invited to take part in surveys or consultations

This flexible role allows members to stay informed and contribute in a way that suits them.

Core PPG Members

The Core PPG is a smaller group of 6–10 members who take a more active role. Core members:

  • Attend regular in-person meetings with practice management and GP partners
  • Discuss topics of interest and patient priorities
  • Review practice performance and areas of need
  • Consider NHS updates that may impact patient care (such as access and policies)
  • Help monitor progress and support improvements

Core members may also support initiatives and events, such as flu clinics, and occasionally work with guest speakers or external organisations.

PPG roles and responsibilities

  • PPG Chair & Deputy Chair
Provide leadership to the group, set agendas, develop initiatives, and maintain strong working relationships between the PPG, the practice, and the wider patient community.
  • PPG Members (Wider Group)
Contribute by responding to PPG email updates, sharing feedback, and helping shape discussions that are brought forward to the practice.
  • Core Members
Take a more active role through regular meetings, helping to review services and support improvements within the practice.

Non-urgent advice: Who Can Join?

The PPG is open to all patients and aims to reflect the full diversity of the practice population. We are particularly keen to increase representation overall, especially within the Core PPG from:

  • Younger patients and families
  • People from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Individuals with disabilities or long-term conditions
  • Other under-represented groups within the practice

A broader range of voices helps ensure services are inclusive and responsive to the needs of all patients.

Getting involved

New members usually join as part of the Wider PPG, with opportunities to become more involved over time, including joining the Core PPG.

Whether you can contribute occasionally or would like to take a more active role, your involvement can make a real difference.
